Marie de France was one of the earliest French woman poets, if not the first one. She lived in England to write. She was known for her long poems the lais. The general makeup of her writing consisted of the supernatural, chivalrous, and Celtic mythological genres. Early in her writing life, her main drive was focused by male power and strong kinship in some of her works to the noble king. In later works, she instituted the focus of women's power as the driving force in her work. This focus gave different perspectives of love between men and women.
