The lai Chaitivel is a love story that is to good to be true. At the hearing of her love for the four knights and their love back, I was shocked and was thinking this will not work out. She says she loves all four but if three die, she cannot love the last. This plays an important role in the lai because three of the knights are killed in battle and the other is severly wounded and on the verge of death. He was comforted by the lady who was still mourning the other three but did not want to further her relationship with the last one. He says on his death bed that any physical embrace would cure him but he received none of that. He was tortured by her grief. It is called the "Four Mournings" because she obviously mourned the three that were killed and then should to the last one because she failed in her opportunity to love him and let go of the past which she did not do.
