Chevrefoil

This is one of her shorter lais that ties in the romance of a Queen and a banished man. The crime with which he committed was that he loved her. During his time out of the castle, he lived in the woods, trying to get back to her in any way possible. His message to her was a symbol of their love. That they are like a honeysuckle vine which in French means "Chevrefoil". The vines tighten around a tree and survive together. If one is severed, the whole thing dies. Once they meet again, they have to part ways and each weeps for the other as their love is being severed. This lai is a good indication of marriage in the medieval times because there is lust for the lady and both think that their love is absolute. In time, it dies out just like a honeysuckle vine if cut. Love was not made to last in this aspect.
