It was uncommon for equality in the medieval times, especially within a marriage. Dorigen was put in a situtaion to possibly dishonor her husband when he left on a trip. When he returns, and finds out of the promise that had been made, he asks her to go and accept it so you could not be shameful. She doesn't because of her honor towards her husband. In the end, Aurelius takes away her promise and lets go of his debt. Chaucer I think is trying to symblize that when those you love are not present, there will always be temptation there to corral you and decisions are costly.
